What Do You Do For A Living?
Written by ady on March 18, 2008 – 1:48 pm -One of the few awkward things about making your living online is what to say when people ask. Previously I ran my own construction company and more recently I managed a popular bar down town.
So when someone says “not seen you for a while, what are you up to now?” I doubt they are expecting “well john, I spend every morning researching the profitability of certain long tail phrases and any found to be promising, I promote in various ways, both white and black hat and usually turn a very nice profit. How’s yourself keeping?”
I don’t know if its embarassment at not getting my hands dirty or if it is just that it doesn’t sound like a “proper job” but I just can’t bring myself to say “online marketer.”
I usually try to be vague and say “internet” which 9 times out of 10 gets the response “oh yea, sat in front of the webcam wanking for a living are you?” which for the most part gets the return “You’ve caught my show then, you enjoy it?”
On the occasion’s I have been honest with close friends etc. it’s turned into a question and answer meeting once they hear you are actually making a living online and how much you are making. They want you to tell them what you have spent this decade figuring out but you know if you do, they won’t act on it, they just want to believe its a cash cow.
They become just like I was a few years a go. They see the $$$ signs, they see “easy street” and they want the secret to online success and they want it now. Looking at how eager they are tells me why there is so much money being made selling crap to the hungry get rich quick crowd, it’s such an easy sale to make.
Thing is though, the secret to success online is to STOP LOOKING FOR THE SECRET. Once you do that you have a chance. If you have a basic understanding of SEO and of either Wordpress or HTML, all you need is a plan and lots of determination and be prepared to work hard….that’s it.
The important bit above is “a plan” the rest you can learn in a couple of weeks. It is the plan where most internet marketers fail. I read somewhere that only 2% who attempt to make a living online succeed and I bet all 2% had a plan and stuck to it to the end instead of buying the latest “Rich Jerk” ebook or some other crap, giving up on the plan they had and starting the new one that promises $32 150 per month, guaranteed, only to dump that plan for next weeks.
I know because I have been there and I own the lot. Most are utter crap. Some have the odd snippet of info that comes in useful and ever so rarely a diamond comes out. My first diamond was free and it gave me my plan. The PLR Process was the first book that actually opened my eyes to what was needed for success online, it laid out a precise plan of attack.
Find a proven formula that makes a certain amount of money online. Do it, rinse and repeat.
The formula can be anything. Have you had success with a PPC campaign? If you have, it can be repeated, so do it. Do you have a blog that makes you a $1 a day on Adsense? Repeat it until you have a few hundred. Got a site that makes you an affiliate sale once a month? Dominate the niche until every search made results in a click on a site owned by you.
That’s all there is to it. Find something that works for you, do it, rinse and repeat. Only when you have mastered one should you move to another plan.
Choose your plan based on your own experiences and knowledge, set yourself a target or time table and do not let anything stop you until you have seen it through.
I did the Adsense plan first as it appealed to me because as I read through the Adsense plan in The PLR Process it was something I was confident I could do. I set myself a target of 50 sites and I stuck to it. It got very boring because it is very repetitive but it made me money so I percevered and actually ended up with 70+ sites. Some made me no more than a dollar a day, most made a few dollars a day and a few made me ten dollars plus every day.
That income gave me the platform for then moving on and trying other things and most of my income now comes from affiliate marketing but I couldn’t have done it without the plan.
